The Power of Habit - Essay Example Anything less than perfect is horrible and I can not bear the feeling of being so incompetent for not being able to meet my standards. Committing a mistake is not an option for me. Aiming for perfection is not a bad thing but making a mistake is not the worse either. Perfectionism and Me Setting higher standards is one of the most common things for perfectionists like me. Those who value perfectionism think that having high standards is a good thing. Excellence means strength and failure is something unacceptable. Most of the common thinkings of perfectionism include the "black & white" or sometimes called as "all or nothing" thinking in which "almost" perfect is considered a failure (Scott, "Perfectionist Traits"). There is no space for mistakes ad whenever standards are not met, more often, people like me end up with self pity and will stress ourselves for being weak and stupid. Another kind of thinking perfectionists exhibit is catastrophe thinking which means mistakes create humi liation and disappointment from other people ("How to Overcome Perfectionism, 2). Also known to be common to perfectionism is the "should" statements. For them, everything is a responsibility and must be done respectively. I cannot remember well when exactly did I become a perfectionist. I can only remember that I always strive to be on top and the best among the rest. Striving hard does not necessarily mean only in academic standing. Instead, being perfectionist includes my daily routine and my long term goals. Being a perfectionist, I cannot help but plan my day and my meal. I cannot bear to waste time wondering what to do or what to eat. Thus everyday, I prepare a "to do" list for me to ensure things I should do will be done the way I want it to be. I am not ashamed of being a perfectionist. What makes me hate this part of being me is the fact that I always end up too disappointed whenever I fail to do something in my list and this seem to amuse my family and friends. My family a nd friends always tell me that I overanalyze everything that I forgot to enjoy my life anymore. I hate it when my friends can just make fun and laugh about the some things they messed up while I can't. Making a mistake me feel so stupid and I can't help but blame myself even when replying to emails and text messages. It's harder to stop at this point because I've already got used to it. But my family and friends always encourage me to be light, take things slow and enjoy every moment. As they say, life will never be perfect and being imperfect is what makes us human. Mistakes make a person stronger and better. The Power of Habit and The Habit Loop According to Duhigg (2012), individuals and habits are all different. If we are looking for the correct formula to change habits, then we will never get it because it does not exist. In Duhigg's book entitled The Power of Habit (2012), he identified the habit loop and the framework to identify our habit as well as the formula that out brai n follows why we have habits. The habit loop is constituted by a routine, reward and cue. People can only understand their habit once they know the components of this habit. Routine is the behavior a person want to change. Being a perfectionist by going through planning everything, reviewing and analyzing again and again to avoid mistakes is the routine I want to try to get rid of. Rationale how women are treated in soap operas Essay I am going to be investigating into how women are treated in soap operas. The reason I have chosen to carry out this study is due to the fact that I think that women are given very stereotypical roles within soap operas and it is very hard for them to break out of those boundaries and those specific labels they have been given. The method I will take to reach my objective is to use the content analysis approach. This is a method I will adopt using Meehans research. My aim is to compare how much or how less has changed within that period of time. I hypothesise that in comparison to Meehans analysis of soap operas women are still labelled in the same categories. From this method I should be able to reach to a conclusion as to whether my hypothesis is correct. The method of research I am going to use is content analysis of magazines, TV and newspaper. Content analysis involves the very careful quantification of the content of the media messages. It is able to give a general impression about media content, which can be the basis of theoretical work or policy and programme development. Therefore the way I will carry out my research is by using Meehans study that was carried out in 1960s and 1970s on soap operas and how he categorised the women within the soaps into specific groups. I will carry out my research using a lot of primary resources. To investigate this concept I am going to look at the model, which is similar to the hypodermic syringe model. I am also going to use the feminist approach to try to explain some of the reasons as to why there are so many stereotypical views within soap operas towards women. I am going to be looking at Fergusons feminist cult theory. This highlights how there are many stereotypical views within the soap operas. Context She is seen in Meehans content analysis study of the presentation of women in soap operas shows that in American drama serials there are only 10 female character types that are presented, they are; The Imp, a rebellious tomboy character. She is adventurous, not really sexual, often finds herself in trouble, she is the opposite of what society expects a women to be and the trouble she gets into is often a result of this. The Goodwife, she is domestic, attractive, home-centred and content. She does not wish to become involved with the world outside the home, leaving this to her lovely husband. The Harpy, is an aggressive single woman. She is powerful, even overpowering and not afraid to take on or chase after men. The Bitch, is a sneak and a cheat. She is manipulative, dangerous and deceitful. She lacks the power to be a real villain (invariably male) but she causes real trouble for the forces of good. The Victim, is the passive female who suffers accident, disease or violence, depending in the type of show or it could be to domestic violence. The Decoy, she is a heroine disguised as a victim. Apparently helpless and dependent, shes actually strong and resourceful. She is quite likely to be mistreated, hurt or captured, but she is capable of overcoming her difficulties. The Siren, is a woman who uses her sexuality to lure her victim to a sticky end. The Courtesan, is close to being a prostitute and perhaps has been one. The Witch, has extraordinary power despite this she is invariably dominated by a man and is persuaded often reluctantly to suppress her powers or use it for his aims. The Matriarch, prestige and authority. a positive light despite the fact that she is too old to be sexually attractive. Her status is almost of that of a hero. This study shows that women are portrayed as neater good or evil, never a combination. It also shows that good women are portrayed as submissive, sensitive and domesticated. Bad women are portrayed as rebellious, independent and selfish. Male evil characters are always counterbalanced by good ones, this is not so with female evil characters. The number of occupations which women are portrayed as holding is limited to a few, primarily housewife, receptionist and whore, male roles are also few in number compared to reality, but are more exciting, such as doctor, spies, detective and astronaut. While studies such as Meehans, could be criticised for being dated and referring to the series of the 1960s and 70s. The content recycling of such series on satellite and cable channels means that they are still relevant. Moreover, many of the point she makes are relevant even in more recent television. The number of women portrayed in the media depends very much on the medium concerned and the genre type. Soap operas have relatively high proportion of women, though they are still outnumbered by as much of 7 men to 3 women in some types of soap opera. The power of the media in this respect is thought to be very strong. This is not surprising as the Average American girl will have spent more time in front of the TV by the time she is 15 than she will have spent in the classroom. Beuf also argues that women suffer anxiety and stress due to this and because advertising and soap operas create concerns in women particularly about; their body image, the constant need to spend money on products to make them more attractive and desirable for males and also the competition with other women to fight and keep their man. Liberal feminists argue that individuals are trained by the mass media and other social institutions into patterns of behaviour which are performed unconsciously. Sex-roles in particular, have been built up over a long period of time and have become embedded in our culture. Radical feminists identify men as the enemy. They believe that men consciously and unconsciously manipulate social institutions for their own benefit and to the detriment of women. Men hold the dominant positions throughout the media and are able to use them to reflect the images of women which they desire. According to socialist feminists the role of the media is to sustain and perpetuate the capitalist system and the supporting role of women in it. Davies says that those who control the media are almost all rich men, there is every incentive for them to present the capitalist, patriarchal scheme of things as the most attractive system available and to convince the less privileged that the oppression and limitations of their lives are inevitable. Design/methodology/approach The paper combines analysis of various documents as well as insights from researchers. Industry Contribution Due to booming industries like IT and outsourcing industry, a growing number of business trips are made by foreigners to India, tourists spend more in India than almost any other country across the globe. India has a wide population of educated, hospitable people who have the moral strength and desire to welcome tourists. Major brands such Emaar Group, Kingdom Hotel Investments; and international fund companies such as Blackstone, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch among others have solidified their interest in the Indian hotel sector. The greatest threat is to those who are most vulnerable to natural and man-made pressures. Tourism can help: The deterioration of air and water supply Destruction of natural landscapes Destruction of vegetation Threats to wildlife The challenge is to develop a procedure to assess the potential environmental impacts of tourism development. Other mechanisms can be used to solve the impact of tourism regulations, the establishment of national parks, protection of significant heritage management and legislation to help protect our cultural and natural resources. In tourism development and environmental protection activities linked to the production of future success. Uncontrolled development is likely to undermine the tourist attraction. Adequate planning by the government, the threat of environmental degradation faced by the world tourism industry can be overcome. The social impact of tourism Between visitors and residents can be mutually beneficial social ties: 1. Resident population to gain more understanding of cultural tourists, so as to maintain the national heritage of some of the traditional activities and needs. 2. Passengers bring tourism revenue and maintenance, and for local use these facilities. Visitors can go to the same host country and its culture and traditions of understanding of their homes. The development of tourism can promote each others misunderstanding, hostility and social tensions, the impact of living by the tourists. This could include prostitution, crime and gambling. Social policy and social services must become an integral part of tourism planning, tourism operators and by the host government. Failure to do so may appear hostile to tourists, which can reduce the tourist flow and vitality. Results and Discussions We conducted the survey among diverse demographics to analyze the current situation of tourism industry of India. After collecting data, we first performed the factor analysis on the data. From factor analysis we got five different factors on which we performed multiple linear regression (MLR) to get the refined results. Given below is the output that we generated from SPSS: We can clearly find out that people give importance to Information about tourist spots, tour packages and security then Infrastructure and Hospitality. To attract large number of tourists we need to implement solutions for these factors and have to take appropriate measure for the growth of Indian tourism Industry. Recommendations as per our study Tourism is the worlds largest production activities. This is accepted as their source of income and employment potential of the results of the government. The pace and the future tourism project are to determine the direction of the explosive growth: Information We need to develop an information system which is very efficient and accessible across the globe which also includes remote areas. Security In India we need to make sure that we have to keep safety mechanism ready and speedy by connecting every tourist place, hotels to our police stations. We can keep a chunk of the policemen to cater particular to this need. Creativity Industry people have to start working on framing the package tours with more creativity and innovation as our mass tourist products are more or less same and lack the flexibility which is required. Infrastructure We need to provide adequate protection of the environment. Tourism trend is closely related to national infrastructure. Infrastructures in India needs huge investment outlay and will directly have an impact on the growth of the tourism Industry. Accessibility Transport technology to make long-term fortunes with more affordable, more people to participate in international travel. Chosen to reflect the perceived safety of the destination. Accommodation Tourists will be attracted to the destination best suits their needs. Tourism is trying to provide travel experiences to suit all budgets and circumstances. Comparing the Role of the Narrator in Melville’s Benito Cereno, Henry James’ Daisy Miller and Hwang’s M. Butterfly Written stories differ in numerous ways, but most of them have one thing in common; they all have a narrator that, on either rare occasions or more regularly, help to tell the story. Sometimes, the narrator is a vital part of the story since without him or her, it would not be possible to tell the story in the same way, and sometimes, the narrator has a very small role in the story. However, he or she is always there, and to compare how different authors use, and do not use, this outside perspective writing tool, a comparison between Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno, Henry James’ Daisy Miller, and David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly will be done. One of the basic functions of the narrator is to describe the actions that occur from an outside perspective. Since almost no characters will describe the basic actions, i.e. how people are moving, in the plot, it is necessary to use the narrator as help in this issue. All three works that are compared in this essay, Daisy Miller, Benito Cereno and M. Butterfly, use this technique quite often and in very similar ways. First of all, we have James who never writes any words without explicit meaning to the story. As a result, the narrator’s descriptions of simple actions are often short and concise; â€Å"Daisy looked at him for a moment† (James 108). However, since M. Butterfly is originally written to be performed and not read, Hwang uses the narrator to describe the stage for the reader. Therefore, most of the narrator’s comments are related to how the characters move on stage, and how the stage itself looks like; â€Å"They start to walk about the stage. It is a summer night on the Beijing streets. Sounds of the city play on the house speakers† (Hwang 21). Melville, on the other hand, uses the narrator for more detailed purposes. He often adds specific details to the descriptions; small hints of what is still to come in the storyline. A good example of this is when he describes how the two captains in the story are standing on the deck: â€Å"While most part of the story was being given, the two captains stood on the after part of the main deck, a privileged spot, no one being near but the servant† (Melville 45).

Sometimes promoting Anti- Discriminatory Practices may be threatening to workers as there are great changes in legislation time to time. The legislations are there to prevent Care Workers from discriminating towards Client Service users. Disability is a state or function that can be judged severally as damage taken place. It causes consequences such as physical, sensory, cognitive and intellectual impairments due to mental illnesses and different types of diseases and situations.It effects individual's organ or body part and may also effect individual's participation in life. This is why there is an Anti- Discriminatory practice that promotes disabled individuals in participating in life and protects individuals from getting discriminated. The act that am going to talk about is the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DAD) that relates to Disability. T he main purpose of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 is to improve the lives of Disabled people by allowing them to carry out day to day activities. However, it does not mean the legislation creates new individual sights for the Disabled people.The act is there to prevent individuals from getting discriminated due to the disabilities. The act ensures that all individuals are entitled to civilian rights in the way that they are entitled to goods, services and facilities that are needed for their needs. The DAD is also there to encourage other communities to help provide regulations which would break the barrier that has been causing discrimination; this is done providing reasonable adjustments like: Providing Transport but also booking premises check if wheelchairs etc are accessible.Share personal details if needed. Improve access route within the location. -: Communicate with disabled person about services that are provided and explain how to improve accessibility. Anti- Discriminatory Practices being promoted in a Health and Social Care setting In order to promote Anti- Discriminatory Practices in the Health and Social Care Settings, Care Workers must train, keep up to date with changes within the legislations, policies and technology as procedure may change over the years, as procedures may change, Care Workers must learn the new procedures to continue on their professionalism in the Career.Care Workers must be informed about the changes in Equality, Diversity and Rights and also any other aspects of Health and Social Care such as the four ethical Principles, Hes s are sectors that must be taken into account to protect the Client Service Users, the sectors are: Justice- this is where people must be treated fairly with respect no matter the differences. An example of this would be, even though a man may be Dyslexic, he should be treated with respect rather than treating him stupidly. Anatomy- this is where a person's choice must be valued. : Beneficence- this is where Care Workers take respond and take action in way that benefits their Client Service Users. They take on risks and costs. An example of this may be, cost of Electronic Wheelchair for a person ho cannot walk. -: Non- Maleficent- this is where Care Workers shouldn't let harm caused by treatments and inventions affect the benefits of their treatment with the Client Service Users. An example of this may be, even if a disabled person has been treated in a Hospital and feels a lot better, A Care Worker cannot say: ‘Your feeling better, you don't need me, another Client needs my h elp more than you. This sort of behavior is not acceptable and professional as Care Workers main purpose is too help anyone who is in need of help. These four principles are there to help guide Care Workers On how to protect Client Service users. Other than the Four Ethical Principles, there are also other procedures that will help Care Workers to keep professionalism and to also help Client Service User by following the Care Value Base, Charter of Rights and the Code of Practice; The Care Value Base is Principles that would help keep Care Workers and Client Service Users relationship professional.These Principles are: The promotion of Anti- Discriminatory Practice. An example for this would be promoting the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 for Disabled People. The promotion and support of dignity, independence and safety. Care Workers should look after the well-being of a Disabled individual. -: Respect for and Acknowledge of personal beliefs and an individual's identity. Care Wo rkers should show the Disabled person that although they have their difference, they are valued in the same way as any other individual. They won't be treated unequal. : The maintenance of Confidentiality. Care Workers should prove to the Disabled person that Care Worker can be trusted unless there are risks; Confidentiality may be broken in order to prevent any trouble of harm. -: Protection from abuse and Harm. Care Workers should ensure Disabled people that their Health and Safety is very important The promotion of effective communication and relationship. An example for this would be a Deaf person, as they cannot hear; Care Workers may bring in for them a worker who may be able to communicate with them through Signs.The promotion of personalized (individual) care. An example of this would be that the disabled individual would be entitled to care that fits their needs. In Health and Social Care, Charter of Rights is standards that are expected from the Service. Client Service Use rs are entitled of these rights. For instance, as for a Disabled person they are entitled to: Right to be respected. Disabled person should feel that they are valued although they may not be the same as others. Rights to Safety from Harm. Disabled people should feel as if they are protected. Right to be allowed Privacy.Disabled people should feel as if they have some space no matter what their situation may be. Right to Confidentiality. Disabled people should feel as if they can trust the Health and Social Care Settings. Right to have access on you. Disabled people should feel as if they are entitled to looking at their own deiced health status. -: Right to independence and Choice. Disabled people are entitled to being dependent on them and should always be entitled to choices. Right to Freedom of Speech. Disabled People should feel as if they can have a say in anything.They should feel as if they are allowed to express their feelings or opinions etc. Right to be seen within a reaso nable time scale. Right to celebrate your own Culture and Beliefs. Disabled people should feel as if their Cultures and Beliefs are respected and valued. Right to be able to communicate in your own language. Disabled people should be allowed to speak in their own language; therefore, Care Workers should bring in translators or interpreters etc. Right to be supportive. Disabled people should feel as if Care Workers are by their side. They shouldn't feel alone and lonely.Right to make their own decisions. Disabled people should be allowed to decide on choices that relates to them and decisions shouldn't always be made for them. Code of Practice is another way of promoting Anti- Discriminatory practice. It is there to guide Care Workers on their roles, responsibilities and rights. It is there to remind Care Workers of what their job is about. The practices for this act are: To respect Diversity of Clients, to be Non- Discriminatory. To treat with Equality and Equity. To respect their R ights, Cultures and Beliefs of Client Service User. : To empower Client Service Users. To promote independence and choice of Client Seen,'ice Users. Not to Marginal's or Disemboweled Client Service users. These principles and the DAD are there to guide Care Worker. Care Workers in the right direction but to also allow them to feel as if they are committed to the Principle and Legislations. Furthermore, Care Workers can also rumoring individual rights; these can be shown in waiting rooms, receptions, canteens etc, for Client Service Users to see, but to also show Client Service Users that Care Workers are taking their job seriously.Furthermore, promoting individual rights can be read out to Client Service user, not only that, if Care Worker is unsure, they are also provided a handbook, which shows Equality, Diversity and Rights, so that their job can still stay professional. Care Workers can also empower individuals, so that individuals feel as if they are able to make choices and de cisions on their own behalf. Care Workers do his to show Client Service Users, that the Health and Social Care settings are there to support them but to also show them that, the service only care about their best interests.The Principles and the DAD is there to also inform Client Service Lesser that they are equal and same as any other individual. This Legislation also goes toward people with HIVE and Students with Disabilities. Not following professional standards can also lead to Diplomacy Actions and dismissal. Successes of Recent Initiative in Promoting Anti- Discriminating Practice The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 is a law, which means that if anyone goes against this law, serious acts would take into consideration.The main repose of the law is eliminating discrimination toward people who have disabilities. The act ensures that every individual is treated with Equality, Diversity and Rights. This is why promoting Anti- Discriminatory Practice is successful, as it is a method of preventing discriminations. Care Workers must be â€Å"Professional and Positive† as negativity can cause more problems.Furthermore, other ways of overcoming difficulties is by giving advice and guidance (rights) by implementing from the government of policies and guidelines by manager. Furthermore, explaining to worker and individuals of the consequence when breaking the rules Of the Anti- Discriminatory practices. Care Workers can use the Complaints Procedure. These are procedures that al organizations and smaller work places have to follow as the law has made this one of the way of sorting out any conflicts.The Compliant Procedure is there to show Client Service User that any Complaints they have would be dealt effectively and efficiently as Complaints are not acceptable. The Health and Social Care Setting would investigate Complaints properly, even after dealing with Compliant, if Client Service Users are not satisfied with the procedures; they may complain further or even be entitled to receive compensation if they are harmed. The Anti- Harassment is another policy where all organization must follow a logic of law which deals with any sort of harassment.Harassment on the basis of Sexuality, gender, disability, belief etc Advocacy is another way of overcoming any difficulties as a Care Worker is there to represent their Client Service User as they may be young, vulnerable or even elderly. They support their Client so that they don't get discriminated or neither feels as if they are alone.
